"One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world."
These words are from the youngest Nobel Prize laureate, Malala Yousafzai, who is a campaigner of education for women in the north-west Pakistan. Malala has been known for her struggle against the suppression of girls' education. She gained global attention for being shot in the head by the extremist group Taliban.
Time Magazine featured her in one of its 2013 issues as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World".
As she turns 18 today, let's look at some of the interesting facts on the Nobel Prize winner:
She was given her first name Malala which means "grief-stricken" after a famous Pashtun poetess and warrior, Malalai of Maiwand, from Afghanistan
In 2009, when Taliban had bombed most of the girls' school at the Swat valley, Malala wrote her experiences for BBC under the pseudonym Gul Makai
She started speaking about girls' education when she was only 11 years-old
She was only 15 years old when she was shot by the Taliban
She was awarded a doctorate degree "Honourary Doctor of Civil Law" from the University of King's College in 2014
Time magazine featured her as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" in 2013
She gave a speech at the United Nations on her 16th birthday
